Scientific Background
The core of Optima's intellectual property, Aura, is based on the
scientific research initiated by Dr. J. Chris Sackellares and Dr. Leon D.
Iasemidis in 1988. They applied techniques for analyzing nonlinear chaotic
systems to the study of EEG signals from
patients with medically refractory epilepsy. Later, Dr. Sackellares and
colleagues at the University of Florida reported evidence that seizures evolve
in a characteristic way over minutes to
hours and are preceded by a preictal transition that is detectable by
monitoring the spatiotemporal features of EEG. These discoveries
provide the Company strong scientific rationale for development of brain
monitoring systems that will enhance the efficiency and safety in the routine
inpatient care of patients with epilepsy or other neurological disorders.
